Sunday Sunday

Sigh… my weekend begins. D is off today after working 6 days until yesterday. I’m so very glad he’s home today….just tired of being in charge of three small people day after day. He took the older two for a walk to the playground this afternoon while the little one (and a little friend who is here to visit) had their sleeps. I fell asleep on the couch. Quiet house…blissful. I am feeling much much better after just a little break and some needed silence. Thanks D!

I woke up just in time to see a little hedgehog waddling across our front lawn. He was in no hurry as he pottered along snuffling into the grass looking for whatever it is that hedgehogs look for. He made his way right across our lawn and toddled off down the driveway. So cute. I wanted to take a picture, but couldn’t find the camera, but he looked quite like this one.

And apparently they eat insects, worms, centipedes, snails, mice, frogs, and snakes, and are usually nocturnal. Thanks for popping out for a visit little hedgehog.

And that’s all I have to say about that. Or anything else. See, I mentioned you never know what you’re gonna get when you come here. Bet you weren’t expecting a hedgehog.

Let’s Just say…

that today was a bad day and leave it at that shall we? Yes, I thought so. Enough said.

All sorts of random bits of unimportantness that you might just like to know. Or not

OK, even though I said I’d post every day for the month of September, I never promised quality. Just saying. Ok?

So, here’s a fun website for kids. It’s a game that’s not. Hmmm makes sense so far. yes. It’s an easy and fun website where the kids can just click on anything and something happens. (Oh, yes, I’m specific and concise today…I can feel it.) There’s heaps to explore and it’s a great way to get little ones used to using the mouse. B3’s abilibty to aim and control the mouse has improved a lot since just by messing around on this. You probably still have no idea what I’m talking about go on over and have a look at Red Fish Soup. Make sure the sound is on.(Some of it’s in French, but that’s ok, they have English bits too.)

You got a secret? You wanna tell the world? Well, that’d be kinda silly wouldn’t it?! Maybe not… I’m probably the last person in the world to discover this but how about Post Secret. I don’t think I’m even going to try to explain it to you other than to say that people from all over the world send their secrets to this guy on a postcard and it’s become a bit of a phenomena. I thought about sending a secret in….but decided they weren’t worth the stamp.

I love books and if I had $1000 to spend on books I could happily do it in a day! And if I did have $1000 to spend on books, I’d probably do it online at Better World. This is an online book store with a mission to promote literacy. They do a much better job telling you about what they do here. What I love about this store is that it started with 3 people with an idea to run a business that also helps people. Also, their prices AND shipping is very reasonable (free in the US and US$3.97 worldwide).

Annnnnddd…lastly but by no means leastly, my friend in real life (how exciting!) has started a blog. Go on over there and have a looky see. She’s got an idea to restore a beautiful old chaise which I’m sure some of you creative and refashiony, recycling types will really appreciate. Her blog is called 4maze.

And, that my friends is your dose of unrelated linkiness for the day. Come back tomorrow. Who knows what you’ll get!

Look what we did!

I love candles. I love reading at night with a candle next to me. I love candles burning in the evening while we’re having dinner or drinking coffee or whatever. Not just candles though, I still like a light on, but I love the warm atmosphere and the little bit of a fragrance they create.

Check what we’ve been up to!

No, not candle shopping….Candle Making! These are soy wax candles. Lightly fragranced, and so creamy. E5 really wanted blueberry fragrance, so that’s what these are, but we also made French Vanilla. It has been so much fun learning about wax and fragrance and wicks and temperatures etc etc.

And I know I go on about it, but some of you asked to be kept up dated….These candles are for sale and the proceeds will go towards my Make a Plan project sending a shipment of medical supplies to Zimbabwe. We now have enough stuff to nearly fill a 20ft shipping container so that is very exciting for me. If you click over here you’ll find the candle range and prices.

Couch Time

Some good friends of ours have 6 children. In my book that makes them experts in all things parenting. Well, ok …it’s their excellent parenting that makes them experts. The 6 children just makes them awesome, and the 6 children are awesome which adds credibility to the excellent parenting bit.

Anyway, one of the best pieces of advice they’ve offered us is a little tid bit called “Couch Time”. It simply means that when Dad comes home from work, Mum and Dad spend 15 minutes together on the couch having a catch up about the day or whatever. The kids are not allowed to interrupt unless there’s blood on the carpet. The point of it is two fold. Firstly that Mum and Dad get a catch up before the busyness of family dinners and bedtime routines take over, and secondly (and perhaps more importantly) the kids get to see Mum and Dad spending time together (which previously usually happened only after the children were in bed and of course they did not see).

It reminds them that the marriage is the most important relationship in the family….and in fact, that the marriage is the family to which the children have been welcome additions.

It reminds them that Mum and Dad love each other, are important to each other above anything or anyone else and that we’re not going anywhere.

It reminds them that they are not the centre of the universe or in charge of the family (which actually is a scary place to be when you are 3 or 5 or otherwise little and are still learning to be in control of yourself let alone the entire universe!)

It lets the children see some affection and conversation between Mum and Dad, and so models how grown ups appreciate and enjoy one another.

We have only just started to implement this every day, in the last week or so. So far we have noticed that E5 loves to sit near us and looks at us lovingly and approvingly as we chat together. One day she even ran to the microwave timer (which we had set for 15 minutes to help them understand the waiting bit) and reset it for 5 more minutes! B3 didn’t seem to interested either way and occupied himself with toys in his room or playing with his sister. However his bedtime routine later that evening was much smoother. And R1 (who I’d thought would clambour on to us for cuddles etc. ) played quietly with is toys nearby. When he’d approach to get our attention, D would gently push him away and tell him “not now..go and play”. He seemed to get it.

Although we started doing it for the children’s sake, I am really enjoying that little time. I feel like it clicks our family back into order, and I feel like D is honouring me in my proper place as his wife rather than the cook or cleaner or child rounder upper-er that I often have felt like at the busy time of the day when he gets home. I feel more respected and appreciated by my family. We have so enjoyed having a chance to communicate when D gets home from work. Typically everyone is competing for conversation space when he gets home….I want to talk to him, E5 wants to talk to him, B3 wants to wrestle, R1 wants to cuddle, and of course D himself would just like a moment to breathe after a hard day at work! Taking the time for a 15 minute catch up helps us to connect before the children get their time.

Couch time is working for our family!

Just write…

I’ve kinda lost my blog mojo lately and really want to write more, so this month is going to be my first participation in NaBloPoMo or whatever it’s called! (National Blog Posting Month) I’ve signed up and don’t really know what it’s all about apart from just posting something once a day. Since it’s already the 2nd September in this part of the world, I’m officially behind already, but have probably just scraped in on somebody’s time zone, so I’m cheating a bit back dating the time stamp just a wee bit.

And YAY! Spring is here!!!! Whoo hoo! Our fresias are flowering and when my window is open their fragrance wafts into my room. Love it!

When I turned 16, my cousin gave me a bouquet of flowers that included fresias, and whenever I smell them it brings back memories of that time. I can almost see the chunk of blue sky out my bedroom window in my parents house, the white net curtain billowing in warm dry Adelaide spring air. So, a couple of years ago I planted a pile of bulbs along the flower bed under our front windows. They have flowered faithfully every spring.
